The Toyota Highlander Hybrid was unveiled at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. The hybrid combined a 3mz-fe3.3 litre V6 engine with Hybrid Synergy Drive, thereby utilising a combination of electonic drive and continuously variable transmission. Consequently the Hybrid is 'drive by wire' and there is no mechanical connection between the driver and the engine. Instead the pedals operate the computer, which in turn, operates the engine.
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid was singled out for praise for increasing power whilst at the same time providing environmental and efficiency benefits.
The Hybrid has better acceleration than the non-hybrid, powering from 0 - 60 in 7.2 seconds. It has a fuel economy of between 27 and 31mpg, and a rating of 19 for city and 25 for highway.
